The Fat-Tea:
Community Support
Meeting

Myself and Alli Parker, RCC of

Inner Arc Therapy, host free, monthly community calls for fat people to hang out, share resources, commiserate, and celebrate fat joy.

Anti-Fat bias often alienates fat people from one another. Fatness is one of the few identity groups that doesn’t have in-group bias, and fat people are in desperate need of safe spaces that centre our experiences.

Fat people deserve

All calls are held on Zoom. Participants are welcome to show up however is most comfortable/accessible. Your mic and camera can be on or off, and you can share as much or as little as you want verbally or in the chat. You’re absolutely welcome to attend and just listen with your camera off if you prefer!

Meetings start with a check-in round. Folks are invited to share their name, pronouns, accessibility needs, where they’re located and land acknowledgement, and if there’s anything they want to discuss at the meeting. Of course, all sharing is optional!

The content of our calls changes with each one as different people with different needs show up. In the past we’ve discussed medical resources, decolonial practices, how fatness is being discussed in pop culture/media, clothing, family dynamics, TikTok creators to follow, book recommendations, and lots more.

People can drop in to the space however works best for them - arriving later or leaving earlier. People are also welcome to attend one, or as many meetings as they like. It’s a very free-form space that’s always adapting to meet the needs of participants.

  • Difficulty finding seating that fits your body comfortably (restaurants, waiting rooms, airplanes, etc.)

  • Difficulty finding clothing that fits your body and isn’t exorbitantly expensive

  • Medical discrimination - being told to lose weight by doctors when presenting with nearly any medical issue
